In a Lucid dream-teaching delivered to my consciousness, I discovered that traversing vast dimensions beyond time and space requires matching your frequency to your desired destination \u2014 activating the Living Codes that already live within me. The dreamer floats out through the portal within a portal, riding the vibrational wave, still held in the Dream State \u2014 moving effortlessly into higher dimensional realms. The Golden light receives her. Golden rivers and luminous landscapes bloom around her arrival. This is the remembrance of the sacred technology of Portal Travel: raising our frequency as the key to traversing the Divine realms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I recently started a dream journal this year so doing dream inspired art from a dream journal, as these three art pieces are is new to my art process. I did some study into dream symbols before I began and some exploring of dream interpretations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My husband and I won tickets to travel anywhere but had to fly up a mountain to pick them out of a huge eagle\u2019s nest to have them. Once we arrived it was dark but the view across the valley was of the moon rising between the peaks. The golden reflection of the moon was captured in the lake below. I became enthralled with Americana and the desert, and specifically the experience of being alone and immersed in an endless and revealing road. I included dreamlike symbols such as a cheeseburger and fries, a pink neon sign arrow, a windmill, and a vintage digital alarm clock. I distorted the colors of each object, as well as the scale, to further indicate this was not waking life, or \u201creality.\u201d Symbolically, I was influenced by my background knowledge of dreams and altered states of consciousness. The endless road of my dreams and visions leads me to contemplate pathways, directions, and choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I drive in my dreams, I don’t always know where I’m going or if I’ll end up where I wanted to go. The January atmosphere in India was thick with smoke and orange air. We drove south until the haze lifted and the blankets of mustard fields covered landscapes. The freeway cut its way through countrysides until we slowed to crawl as we approached a toll booth. There, with no camera, I committed to memory the sight of some giggling girls in the back seat of a creeping car next to us and beyond to the mustard fields with a dirt path nestles amongst them. I see an image made of two intersecting black lines which create four quadrants, and there is a grey disc in each of the quadrants. The disc in the upper left quadrant is lighter in color than the others, and I understand this is because it’s been turned over. I also understand that each disc represents a relationship issue, and that the turned-over disc indicates one of the issues has forward-moving energy around it. I feel happy relief, a warm, positive feeling, the sense that something has been given a green light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From just after my mother had died. I was outside the church where her funeral had taken place which has these tall stark bare trees around. There were crows circling and they seem very ominous. I went into the church and my mother was there seated in a pew even though she had died. It was like seeing the walking dead there in the church. Then I was aware of the menacing birds and just sort of a sense of mortality sweeping down through my maternal line: great grandmother, grandmother, mother and I all in this sequence..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The text of Books & Changes: A Dream Story was written by Betsy Davids from eight of her dreams with the aim of tracking the long term trajectory of a dream life over several years. Reenactments of key moments from the dreams were then photographed by James Petrillo to create the image sequence. Many performances of Books & Changes were presented with live voice and projected images in various art venues in the later 1970s. An artist book version was also produced. She also showed up in a vivid dream where she acted as a guide to accompanied me through different locations and biomes which carried different emotions and energies. Similar allies have shown up in meditative journeys as well as general archetypes throughout different cultures. This was an interesting crossover from my experience in EMDR, spiritual healing, and the involuntary processing our minds volunteer us for while we dream. As I developed the connection, I was astonished to see the dream\u2019s resemblance to my ancestor\u2019s (Friedrich August Kekule) dream of a snake coiled around and biting its own tail which led directly to the discovery of the molecular structure of benzene, the Benzene Ring. \u200b

I blend the hair with water, make a tea, and drink it. When I return the jaguar, the elder says she never thought to make jaguar tea. “Perhaps I will make you some one day,” I reply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We start building sculptures of every living being we have known and cherished, those who are already gone and those who are about to be gone forever. People are yelling at us, saying we are foolish. That they are so unrelated to each other their appearing in a single scene can only be the product of a dreaming mind. This is a rendition of a recent dream. The \u201cstory\u201d was that I was investigating a washing machine leak one moment, then the next moment I was looking at these foam-gun like objects between two stone building pillars while my partner was chiding me for being dismissive of her \u201cdefault settings\u201d on the devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Puzzled by this metaphor, I tried to incubate a dream so I could \u201ccatch\u201d the beast, to no avail. After Matthew died, I started horseback riding lessons. On occasion, I’d think back on my frustrated dream. Eventually, I fell off the horse and quit riding. This project consists of twelve cyanotypes created from photographic documentation of a 48-hour period spent in complete, light-tight darkness. In Tibetan Buddhism, a dark retreat is a solitary contemplative practice in which a practitioner remains in darkness to cultivate heightened awareness. Drawing inspiration from this tradition, I undertook the retreat as a meditative framework for inducing lucid dreams. Four photographs were taken at the beginning and end as light was gradually dimmed and reintroduced, marking entry and exit. The central images were recorded in complete darkness and function as temporal markers indicating when lucid dreams occurred. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
